Car vs. Truck Wheel Balancers: Which Do You Need?

1 min read · By Truman Tools & Equipment
Quick answer

Car and light truck balancers handle wheels up to about 150 to 165 lbs. If you balance commercial or heavy truck wheels, you need a car and truck balancer rated for around 440 lbs, ideally with a wheel lift.

In this guide

A car wheel balancer and a truck wheel balancer look similar, but they're built for very different loads. If you balance commercial or heavy truck wheels, a car balancer simply isn't designed to carry them.

    Car and light truck balancers

These are built for passenger cars, SUVs and pickups, with high accuracy for smooth-riding wheels.

    Heavy-duty car and truck balancers

These balance both car and truck wheels, with more capacity and separate car and truck modes.

Both machines use a separate truck mode with a slower spin and a tolerance suited to heavy truck wheels, then switch to 1 gram accuracy in car mode, so you get car-level precision on passenger wheels from the same machine.

    Which one do you need?

    • Cars, SUVs and light trucks only: a car and light truck balancer is all you need, and it's the most accurate and affordable choice
    • A mix of cars and trucks: a car and truck balancer like the CB460B or WBT-210 handles both on one machine
    • Heavy wheels all day: choose a model with a wheel lift, built in or portable

    Our take

If you ever balance commercial, fleet or heavy truck wheels, get a balancer built for them. It's safer for your techs and kinder to the machine. For shops that do a little of everything, a combination car and truck balancer like the Bright CB460B, with its built-in wheel lift and standard 110V power, is hard to beat.
